these memories

The main entry for this special day is here

March eleven -
I turn the calendar leaf
with a heavy heart

March Eleven -
still frost in my garden
frost in my heart

kigo for mid-winter

haru matsu 春待つ (はるまつ) waiting for spring

..... haru o matsu 春を待つ(はるをまつ)
..... taishun 待春(たいしゅん)

The daily cold is still a reality, but the human feeling is already in the near future, hoping for warmer days.

In the year 2012,
this feeling is mixed with the memories of March 11, 2011

even if we remember in spring
the earthquake and the tsunami -

Ten Thousand Things: A Haiku Sequence
Chen-ou Liu, Canada

Sendai earthquake...
the darkness pierced
only by flashlights

Fukushima plant --
the vending machines
still glowing

Ishinomaki:
a baby found alive
in wood and mud

a dog rescued
from drifting ocean debris --
the sun rising

radioactive scare
this a world of dew
and yet...

last year i received a request from a doctor in japan to join thousands around the globe in a specified process:
he asked that we each write out a given prayer for japan on a piece of paper and attach it to a clean glass or ceramic bowl. into the bowl we should pour clean water (i used fresh spring water). we should leave the bowl for a period of time.
i placed mine outside under a full moon. towards morning it rained.
we were asked to take the now encoded water to our nearest river or sea and prayerfully pour it in. the prayer on the piece of paper was no longer legible, having been soaked by rain. where words had been this picture was.
i have kept it beside my statue of the buddha and a picture of my mother.
it felt right to make it into a haiga today.
for japan

the waves are now
so calm

just twelve moons ago
the Earth shook and Japan cried
tears are falling still

My husband and I will never forget seeing the wave rush inland.
Our hearts still grieve for you Japan.

eleven March --
finding a long lost ball
in a flower bed

The ball was now flat, and overgrown with moss, but our dog was pleased to play with it again. It made me think of the people who had lost so much in the events of 11 March last year --
and who perhaps found some of their valued posessions later, dirty and spoilt but still theirs...

Our thoughts are with you,

Isabelle Prondzynski

dangerous clouds -
a little girl embraces
her doll

Radioactiv rain -
after sixty six years
Fukushima

The day of mourning -
the children put on the water
paper boats

The cranes come back
sakura is blooming
the hope arises

Sent letters:
Dear Japon
we love you

Over the ruins
blossoms of cherry trees
rest in silence

On the pond's mirror
again lotus flowers
in the depth blood and mud

The crushed bodies,
lotus flowers, ruins -
tragic ikebana

On the roof
a white flag -
the seagulls caling

Japan mourns

Japan mourns
thousand flowers of lotus
and origami

day of mourning
silence and only prayers
sparkles of tears
